Laughing as he put away his phone, Adam couldn't believe that Hayden was stopping by again. She always seemed to have problems with it. Not that he minded of course, he and Hayden had almost bonded over her inability to keep her car maintained. And it was nice to have regular company for a change. His workshop was just across the street from the mall, which was the ideal place because it meant he had a lot of business. Anyone that had car trouble could enjoy the fact that all they had to do was leave their car with him then head over to the mall for shopping. He had to admit, it got lonely sometimes. But perhaps that was just because he naturally preferred the company of people. He had never really been the loner type, except in the severe times of his depression. Even then, things could've ended up a lot differently if he'd had someone around to talk to.
He went to the back and washed his hands, ready to see what the problem was this time. He thought of her fondly, as he'd never really seen a customer visit him this often. At most, he saw a customer three or four times. He looked in the mirror and checked that he looked presentable, ruffling his hair a few times and then questioning why he did it. He looked inside cars all day, nobody expected him to look like prince charming. But still, it mattered to him that he didn't look scruffy and unkempt. When he saw a car pull up, he grabbed his folder that contained all the prices he charged and waited at the front for her with a smile on his face.
"Nice to see you again! What's the problem this time?" he asked as she got out of the car whilst he was leaning against the doorway of the garage he worked in.

It was a wonder Hayden ever got her license in the first place, anything and everything she managed to learn about driving went in one ear and out the other. The extent of her knowledge was that the gas pedal was on the right, the brakes were on the left, and you used the wheel to turn. She tried not to drive too often, due to the accidents she attracted whenever driving. Even after four years of living in America, Hayden still hadn’t gotten the whole “opposite” thing down. Yet, the girl still persisted on driving.
Adam was the first and only person she ever went to when she had car troubles. The two formed a friendship over the years, and eventually Hayden didn’t mind the problems. It gave her an excuse to hang out with him. He’d work on cars, and she’d sit on the hood of hers (unless that was the part that needed fixing, of course) and just...talk.
Hayden refused to admit that this particular accident was her fault. So what? The light was red, but she swear there wasn’t a car there! At least it was at a crossroad, and both cars were turning relatively slow, so the damage wasn’t too bad. That didn’t prevent her from pulling into the garage however. “The front thingy’s falling off she pouted in return to his question, pointing to the front bumper which was practically detached.
”And it wasn’t my fault this time! That person hit me!” Hayden stubbornly crossed her arms and took a seat on the hood of the old, silver nissan altima that was pretty much falling apart at the seams. Hayden knew she should get a new car, but the girl had grown attached to it. It was her first car, afterall.
”Is she going to make it, doc?

In all fairness, Adam had seen far worse drivers than her. Granted, whenever hayden came over he forgot all about those people and resorted to thinking 'damnit, how'd you get your license?' but then he remembered the many people that died within the reckless abandonment of a car. Hayden wasn't dead, and that was a happy note with which to greet her. He really valued Hayden's friendship, so in a way he was happy that she was always there. Although, he had to admit, perhaps her car shouldn't need to break for them to hang out. But Adam's self-esteem was as tough as a puppy facing a snake. He believed in all truth that he wasn't worth getting to know, in any situation, in any scenario. If he was, then why did he feel like he wasn't?
That was a whole different level of talking, though. He didn't talk about things like that with Hayden. It was more comments on the weather, or what kind of new shoes he bought, or his taste in women. Granted, he didn't talk about women a lot. Many people that worked with him suspected that he might be homosexual, though in truth, Adam just didn't see the point in discussing relationships when he wasn't in one. Even when he did enter a relationship, he wasn't the kiss & tell type.
The first time Hayden came, the damage was shocking. Now Adam looked at the damage in Hayden's car with indifference, as he expected anything and everything. A short laugh escaped his lips. "That's what happens when you hit cars from the front." he replied, shaking his head slightly, chuckling at her response.
"Yeah, sure." he teased, winking at her. "Of course it wasn't your fault. your the best driver ever." after a brief inspection he continued, "she's going to be fine. it's just an external injury." he told her, running his hand across the skin of the car like a doctor trying to feel a heartbeat.
